The Powder Alliance is proud to announce the addition of its 22nd resort, Mt Shasta Ski Park, in Northern California. Located high in the Cascade Mountains, Shasta’s alpine skiing and riding are legendary with more than 450” of snow this season. Thanks to its deep maritime snowpack and reliable California weather, Mt Shasta Ski Park is truly an epic adventure worth discovering.

Wild, playful, and mighty. Tūroa sits on the southwestern slopes of Mt Ruapehu, the country’s largest active volcano. Tūroa is known for its huge snow bases, unique volcanic terrain, wide trails & epic terrain parks. It is one of New Zealand’s largest ski areas with the nation’s longest vertical drop at 2,369ft (722m).

The High Noon Express 6-seater chairlift reaches the highest lifted point in New Zealand where guests can enjoy panoramic views of North Island. Its cliffs, bowls & volcanic terrain make it feel like you’re out in the winter wilderness, even when you’re skiing or riding within the ski area boundary. Tūroa can be likened to a large playground. Its terrain naturally encourages skiers & snowboarders to be playful with one beginner area, plenty of gullies, drops, natural hits, wide trails & world-class terrain parks. There’s always more to explore in this special place.

Whakapapa Ski Area sits just a short drive away from Tūroa the north-western side of Mt Ruapehu. It is the North Island’s highest peak at 9,176ft (2,797 meters).

Whakapapa offers 1,359 acres of the best ski & snowboard terrain in New Zealand. The base elevation is 5,347ft and well above the tree line, whilst the highest lifted point is 7,600ft (2,320 meters). It is home to New Zealand’s longest gondola, the Sky Waka. After sailing to the top, you ride over ancient lava flows, past ruminants of old crater rims, and through the clouds. Explore everything from cruisy groomers to exhilarating chutes, bumps & drops, made all the more exciting by the natural volcanic terrain.

Whakapapa is 30% Beginner, 45% Intermediate, and 25% Advanced so there is something for every member of the family. The area has modern on-mountain facilities including some of New Zealand’s newest chairlifts yet lodging is much more affordable than southern Queenstown or Wanaka.

The highlight of the facilities is the dining options located in the Knoll Ridge Chalet. Sitting on the terrace, sipping a coffee, admiring The Pinnacles (an impressive rock ridge), one could be forgiven for not wanting to go home.

Established in 1936 Snow King is Jackson Hole’s original ski area and the first in Wyoming. Locals sometimes refer to Snow King as “The Town Hill,” with skiing, hiking, North America’s Steepest Zip Line, and many other attractions. There’s nothing “residential” about this mountain though. Snow King offers 1,571ft of vertical with plenty of upper-level terrain and great new beginner-intermediate terrain introduced in 2022. With the new Snow King Gondola, guests can travel up the hill in just a few minutes to enjoy amazing views and all the awesome skiing and boarding terrain the King has to offer.

It is one of Alaska’s best-kept secrets with big mountain terrain, 640+ acres, 1620ft vertical, and panoramic ocean views. As you can imagine, Eaglecrest gets the snow averaging 320” per season with a record-setting 640” in 2011-12.

Travelers must arrive by plane or ferry and are rewarded with untracked powder and hardly a lift line. Backcountry skiers and splitboarders are encouraged to pack beacon, shovel, probe, and Know Before You Go! Eaglecrest has impressive backcountry access that is lift-served on operating days. Regular operations are Thursday to Monday, December through mid-April, and daily during Christmas and Spring Break.

White Pass is located in Washington’s Cascade Mountain Range, just SE of beautiful Mount Rainier. Champion ski racing twins Phil and Steve Mahre (and their seven siblings) grew up there, where their father Dave “Spike” Mahre was the Mountain Manager. White Pass lives up to its name with 400 inches of snow each season and 2,000 feet of vertical. Choose from a relaxed family atmosphere at the base or pulse-quickening steeps off the Great White Express. The area’s mid-mountain lodge, High Camp, is also the perfect meeting point for brunch or an afternoon beer. White Pass features slopeside lodging at the Village Inn, on-site Child Care, multiple dining options, a full-service learning facility, and Nordic rental & retail centers. If you are chasing powder on a big road trip, the only thing better than experiencing the deep snow of White Pass is doing it for FREE through the Powder Alliance.

This season, pass holders from every Powder Alliance resort set out in search of the best snow possible in the 2018/19 Wild West Powder Quest. Some spent days, other spent weeks. Some traveled as far as Chile and Japan but all recorded their visits on Instagram #WWPQ19 for a chance to win season passes, goodie bags, and a trip for two (2) to the Powder Alliance resort of their choice. This season three lucky winners were rewarded for their love of their sport, Larry McDonald, Adam Baron, and Karen Boyle.

Congratulations to Larry McDonald from Gunnison, CO, 1st Place winner this year’s Wild West Powder Quest. This road warrior visited 15 of the Alliance’s 19 resorts making for the winter road trip of a lifetime. In celebration, he and a friend will be slaying even more fresh powder at La Parva, Chile this summer.

Larry has been skiing for more than 40 years with almost a decade spent working at resorts like Heavenly and nearby Crested Butte where he cleared trails in the summer and skiing all winter. Since then he has skied at nearly 150 areas in the US, Canada, and Italy, averaging 50 days a season…more now that he has retired and travels with his two rescue cats, Sydney and Webster. His 2000 Toyota Tundra shows 275,000 miles and he swears more than half of those are for skiing road trips.

When asked about his journey, McDonald said “My favorite Powder Alliance experience was at SilverStar Resort in British Columbia, where everything was ski-in and out. Ski-in and ski-out, ticket window, shops, lodging, restaurants…there was snow everywhere! Timberline in Oregon was incredible too. The collection of resorts in the Powder Alliance is awesome and visiting so many of them this season was amazing.”

For his 1st place prize, Larry is spending 4 days south of the border at La Parva, Chile. This package includes lift tickets, lodging, and airfare for two. Congratulations again Larry!

She takes home a swag bag from her home mountain, Loveland Ski Area, CO, filled with sweatshirts, hats, mugs, stickers and more. Says Karen, “We had a fantastic time at all the resorts. Angel Fire was really amazing as we had tons of snow for somewhere so far south. Bridger Bowl had the loveliest people and a great local ski guide. China Peak has to be the prettiest resort in the Powder Alliance with its stunning pines. The Wild West Powder Quest has been great for getting us to try amazing new resorts out that we would otherwise know nothing about. It helped shape our road trip and got us in touch with the nicest people and wonderful local towns. It was a real trip of a lifetime!”

Said John McColly, Powder Alliance, “These two really embodied the spirit of the promotion. They got out there, they got serious about tagging themselves, and they toured a bunch of resorts for free with their season passes to Loveland Ski Area.

Sugar Bowl is one of the oldest resorts in California with ties to Austrian ski culture, Hollywood and Walt Disney. With four majestic mountain peaks and more than 500” of snowfall annually, it is the perfect addition to any Powder Alliance road trip. 12 lifts access 1,650 acres and 105 trails that include everything from steep chutes to wide bowls to perfectly groomed cruisers, as well as plenty of gentle terrain for beginners and young children. Now the Powder Alliance’s second resort at Lake Tahoe, Sugar Bowl is known for its short lift lines, uncrowded slopes and highest annual snowfall.

Castle Mountain Resort (CMR) is the real deal. It is Alberta, Canada’s snowiest winter resort and second largest at 3,592 acres. The resort is known for the best continuous fall-line in Canada with no shortage of powder, 350 in, 900 cm’s annually. 2,833 feet of vertical are sure to get your legs burning with close to 100 trails and 8 delicious alpine bowls. Castle Mountain’s real strength is its appeal to advanced and expert riders. The area holds lots of steeps, glades, mini moguls, chutes, and cliff bands where freshies last for days. Located just 2.5 hours from Calgary, it is the only area in Alberta with drive-to, ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Visitors can book a stay at the Castle Mountain Ski Lodge & Hotel and/or find a variety of dining options in Castle’s mountain village.

If that wasn’t enough to put Castle on your list, they offer Alberta’s only resort-based cat-skiing operation, the Powder Stagecoach. This resort-based wilderness adventure uses the Huckleberry Chair and a snowcat to take guests to 2,000 vertical and nearly 900 acres of untracked terrain. Castle’s cat skiing combines the best of both worlds; pristine, untouched glades and bowls with all the amenities that one would expect.

The area itself has an old school vibe and is ideal for those who enjoy skiing and snowboarding without the extra frills. If you are chasing powder on a big road trip, the only thing better than experiencing the superb hospitality at Castle is doing it for FREE through the Powder Alliance.

Marmot Basin is located 20 minutes south of the authentic, mountain town of Jasper, Alberta. Boasting the highest base elevation of any major ski area in Canada, nature provides an abundance of light, dry snow from November to early May. Since 2003 more than $29 million has been invested in new lifts, snowmaking and gorgeous base area amenities. Marmot Basin is a world-class ski area that has maintained its uncrowded status in the breathtaking, protected wilderness of Jasper National Park, which is an integral part of the UNESCO Canadian Rockies World Heritage Site.

Marmot Basin encompasses 1,720 acres of skiable terrain on five mountain faces that include 91 named runs and 3 terrain parks. You will find everything from long, winding, novice trails to high alpine bowls and steep chutes. Seven lifts, including the longest, high-speed quad in the Canadian Rockies, access 3,000 vertical feet and a top to bottom run of more than 3.5 miles. This season, they opened Tres Hombres, 45 acres of treeless slopes with chutes and powder-filled bowls that provides an uninterrupted fall line of more than 1,200 vertical feet.

Major international airports acting as gateways to this paradise are through Edmonton and Calgary, both of which have a daily scheduled, shuttle service to Jasper. There are many beautiful ski destinations in Canada but none as pristine, natural and stunning as Marmot Basin in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

Castle Mountain Resort (CMR) is the real deal. It is Alberta, Canada’s snowiest winter resort and second largest at 3,592 acres. Located just 2.5 hours from Calgary, it is the only area in Alberta with drive-to, ski-in/ski-out accommodations. Visitors can book a stay at the Castle Mountain Ski Lodge & Hotel and/or find a variety of dining options in Castle’s mountain village. The resort is known for the best continuous fall-line in Canada and no shortage of powder (350 in, 900 cm’s annually).

The Powder Alliance Goes “Japow” With The Addition of Kiroro, Japan

Who really has the most consistent powder on the planet? Kiroro Snow World in Hokkaido is making a serious claim for the title.

Who really has the most consistent powder on the planet? Kiroro Snow World in Hokkaido is making a serious claim for the title. On the back of another great season, the Japanese resort had the most powder days in its region with 925 inches (2,349cm) . This is no accident. When the resort opened in 2001, owners handpicked it as one of two main areas that consistently had the deepest snowpack. In fact it scored a 5 out of 5 from powderhounds.com

Being so new means Kiroro is gleaming with top notch lifts, hotels, and facilities. The resort offers 1,200 acres of in-bound terrain with 21 runs and an equal spread of green, blue and off piste trails. Of the nine lifts, one is a toasty gondola whilst five are high-speed, detachable chairs with cozy hoods. Last season they upped the ante with access to 2,600 more acres of backcountry terrain through three (3) designated entry points.

Winters in Japan mirror those of the United States and Canada lasting from mid-November to early May. This seven month season makes Kiroro the longest running resort in its region.

Kiroro is a snowball’s throw from the Sea of Japan, just 40 minutes from the port and fishing city of Otaru, with free shuttles from the JR station; 90 minutes from New Chitose Airport; 60 minutes from Sapporo; and 50 minutes from Niseko.

Day trips are great, but staying at the base is better. The sumptuous 282 room Kiroro Tribute Portfolio (former Piano Hotel) has the most features, located a Kilometer below the base, with several restaurants, and a little “village” shopping area. But the 140 room ski in/ski out Sheraton Kiroro (former Mountain Hotel) is really where you want to be to jump on the first lift. Every kind of cuisine can be found here from Italian to traditional Japanese. Mountaintop dining at the summit of Mt. Asari is also available offering beautiful scenery for skiers and snowboarders.

The Mountain Centre at Kiroro is well appointed with adult and children’s ski schools, retail shops, a new coffee shop, a ski and snowboard demo area, and kids’ day care. Besides skiing and snowboarding, Kiroro offers numerous winter activities including snowcat sightseeing tours, snow shoe tours, sledding, and snow tubing. Other amenities include indoor and open-air hot springs, a swimming pool, and a day spa to heighten relaxation. Otherwise you can hang out in the games arcade, play billiards or get into the Japanese culture with some pachinko. What Kiroro lacks in nightlife it makes up for in amazing views and peaceful serenity. Of course, if you love noise and blaring music, you can get a great fix in the karaoke room.

Located just outside Nelson BC, on the famous Powder Highway, Whitewater Ski Resort is known for one thing…Powder! More than 12 meters of light, dry, dependable snow falls each season and there are 1,184 acres for visitors to explore. The best thing about the big snow is you don’t have to worry about the big crowds. Far from the maddening business of mega resorts, Whitewater is famous for its short lift lines and big hospitality. In the unlikely event riders get tired of rocking the natural features, they can test their mettle on the metal in the Whitewater Rail Park.

Winter may have just ended but the Powder Alliance is not on summer vacation just yet. This season the Canadian resort, Silver Star, has been added to North America’s premiere multi-resort season pass. Located high above British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, Silver Star is a world-class winter destination with more than 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 116 marked runs, and tons of fresh snow giving families more than enough reason to explore its powder-filled back side and ski-in ski-out accommodations.

The spectacular scenery of Silver Star’s three faces is both vast and varied, and now top-tier pass holders from any Powder Alliance resort can experience it this season for FREE. These areas include Crested Butte, CO, Snowbasin Resort, UT, Sierra-at-Tahoe, CA, Stevens Pass, WA, Timberline, OR, Schweitzer, ID, Angel Fire Resort, NM, Bridger Bowl, MT, China Peak, CA, Mountain High, CA, Arizona Snowbowl, AZ, and Mt Hood Skibowl, OR.

36 FREE days at some of the best resorts in the West makes the Powder Alliance an incredible value when compared to other expensive group passes. There are no membership fees, no collective pass prices, no additional charges of any kind. Guests simply show an anytime 2014/15 season pass from a participating Powder Alliance area and receive free skiing benefits up and down the West Coast.
