Located high in the Cascade Mountains, Shasta’s alpine skiing and riding are legendary with more than 450” of snow this season. Thanks to its deep maritime snowpack and reliable California weather, Mt Shasta Ski Park is truly an epic adventure worth discovering.

The resort is situated just below the summit of Mount Shasta, the Cascade’s second highest volcano behind Mount Rainier. Six lifts and 38 trails extend up the mountain accessing 635 acres of skiable terrain. From its peak at 7,536’, the resort offers 2,036’ of vertical with runs up to 2 miles long.

Established in 1938, Lost Trail is one of Montana’s original ski resorts spanning 1,800 acres along the Montana-Idaho border. It has a top elevation of 8,200’, 1,800’ vertical and receives more than 400” of fresh snow annually.

Established in 1936 Snow King is Jackson Hole’s original ski area and the first in Wyoming. Eaglecrest is located on the lower tip of Alaska, just 30 minutes from the Juneau airport. This season, pass holders from every Powder Alliance resort set out in search of the best snow possible in the 2018/19 Wild West Powder Quest. Some spent days, other spent weeks. Some traveled as far as Chile and Japan but all recorded their visits on Instagram #WWPQ19 for a chance to win season passes, goodie bags, and a trip for two (2) to the Powder Alliance resort of their choice. This season three lucky winners were rewarded for their love of their sport, Larry McDonald, Adam Baron, and Karen Boyle.

Created by the Powder Alliance, one of the world’s premiere season pass cooperatives, the Wild West Powder Quest encourages pass holders to visit all other Powder Alliance resorts (up to three times free) for their chance to win season passes, goodie bags, and a trip for two (2) to the Powder Alliance resort of their choice. This year’s winners are:

1st Place: Larry McDonald – 4 days of lifts, lodging, and airfare for two (2) @ La Parva, Chile

Congratulations to Larry McDonald from Gunnison, CO, 1st Place winner this year’s Wild West Powder Quest. This road warrior visited 15 of the Alliance’s 19 resorts making for the winter road trip of a lifetime. In celebration, he and a friend will be slaying even more fresh powder at La Parva, Chile this summer.

Larry has been skiing for more than 40 years with almost a decade spent working at resorts like Heavenly and nearby Crested Butte where he cleared trails in the summer and skiing all winter. Since then he has skied at nearly 150 areas in the US, Canada, and Italy, averaging 50 days a season…more now that he has retired and travels with his two rescue cats, Sydney and Webster. His 2000 Toyota Tundra shows 275,000 miles and he swears more than half of those are for skiing road trips.

When asked about his journey, McDonald said “My favorite Powder Alliance experience was at SilverStar Resort in British Columbia, where everything was ski-in and out. Ski-in and ski-out, ticket window, shops, lodging, restaurants…there was snow everywhere! Timberline in Oregon was incredible too. The collection of resorts in the Powder Alliance is awesome and visiting so many of them this season was amazing.”

For his 1st place prize, Larry is spending 4 days south of the border at La Parva, Chile. This package includes lift tickets, lodging, and airfare for two. Congratulations again Larry!

Says Larry McDonald, “I’ve already purchased my 19.20 season pass to Monarch Mountain, CO and I can’t wait to experience the awesome Powder Alliance resorts again this winter.”

2nd Place: Adam Baron – 2019/20 Anytime Season Pass to Mountain High Resorts, CA

Adam Baron is this year’s 2nd place winner in the Wild West Powder Quest. He visited 11 Powder Alliance resorts of which Monarch Mountain, CO, was his favorite. Adam wins a 19.20 Season Pass to his home resort Mountain High, CA.

Says Baron, “What I remember most is getting pulled over at 3am by Sheriffs in Idaho then getting denied entry at the Canadian border. My trip was amazing, unplanned and awesome the whole time. I wouldn’t change a thing. See video from Adam Baron’s trip here or on Instagram @filmingprojectors

Adam has been snowboarding for 5 years and skating for 10+. He loves skating but likes the outdoor environment that comes with snowboarding.

Says Baron, “My favorite Powder Alliance resort would have to be Monarch Mountain in Colorado. I love Colorado and the snow was amazing the day I ended up there. Powder like I’ve never ridden before.

3rd Place: Karen Boyle – Swag Bag to Loveland Ski Area, CO (sweatshirt, t-shirt, hat, mug, stickers, and more)

Congratulations to Karen Boyle, 3rd Place Winner in this year’s Wild West Powder Quest. She takes home a swag bag from her home mountain, Loveland Ski Area, CO, filled with sweatshirts, hats, mugs, stickers and more. Karen has been skiing since she was 9 years old and just loves being in the mountains. This season she and her husband Richard set off on a 10,000 mile, 3-month snow tour in their campervan to cover as many resorts as they could. In that time they visited 12 Powder Alliance areas (plus a number of others) and skied 49 days.

Says Karen, “We had a fantastic time at all the resorts. Angel Fire was really amazing as we had tons of snow for somewhere so far south. Bridger Bowl had the loveliest people and a great local ski guide. China Peak has to be the prettiest resort in the Powder Alliance with its stunning pines. The Wild West Powder Quest has been great for getting us to try amazing new resorts out that we would otherwise know nothing about. It helped shape our road trip and got us in touch with the nicest people and wonderful local towns. It was a real trip of a lifetime!”

Amador Montemayor: 4 days of lifts, lodging, and air fare for two (2)

Amador Montemayor, from China Peak, CA, has been snowboarding for 10 years and won the Wild West Powder Quest while taking time off to morn a fallen friend. He visited 12 of the 16 resorts and would have visited to the Canadian areas too, had there been more time.

Says Amador, “I once took a week off work and visited 8 different resorts in 9 days, traveled through 8 different states, cut through Yellow Stone, visited the Grand Canyon, and put more than 5,000 miles on my vehicle!”

For First Place Amador has chosen a 4-day vacation to Kiroro, Japan, which includes lift tickets, lodging, and airfare for two. Congratulations Amador!

Says Amador, “I enjoyed all the Powder Alliance resorts, but my favorite spots had to be Timberline, Steven’s Pass and Schweitzer! Maybe it was because we had a storm following us at all three locations, which made for supreme riding conditions.”

Zack Phelan: 2018/19 Anytime Season Pass

Zack Phelan from Stateline, NV, took home an 18/19 Anytime Season Pass to his home resort, Sierra At Tahoe, for his 2 ^nd place win in this year’s Wild West Powder Quest. When asked about his favorite moment, Phelan said, “Beginning my journey on the Powder Highway at Whitewater. My first experience was a bluebird, midweek powder day that did not disappoint.

Zack recently took up skiing again after a long hiatus since childhood and is now a daily skier.

Says Zack, “I love exploring new resorts and skiing as many as I can each season. The Powder Alliance is the perfect resource to follow that aspiration.”

Robert Coz: Swag Bag (sweatshirt, t-shirt, hat, mug, stickers, and more)

Robert Coz began skiing China Peak, CA, in 1967, when boots were still made of leather and poles were made of bamboo. In 1982 he let his heels free and has been telemarking ever since. Thanks to the Powder Alliance, Robert was able to ski several new resorts this year including Crested Butte, which he now commemorates with an awesome gift bag filled with resort sweatshirts, stickers, hats, socks, beanies, and more.

Marmot Basin is a world-class ski area that has maintained its uncrowded status in the breathtaking, protected wilderness of Jasper National Park, which is an integral part of the UNESCO Canadian Rockies World Heritage Site.

Located just 40 miles from the Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport in Santiago, Chile, La Parva offers more than 27 miles of trails and 250 inches of snowfall annually. Its winter season extends from June to September making it the perfect addition to the primarily North American-based Powder Alliance. Levi Frederick: 2017/18 Anytime Season Pass

Levi Frederick from Chandler, AZ, took home a 17/18 Anytime Season Pass to his home resort of Arizona Snowbowl for his participation in this year’s Wild West Powder Quest. When asked about his favorite moment Frederick said “Sierra At Tahoe. Epic powder, the gates are amazingly fun to ride, and the BBQ is out of this world!”

Peter Stitt is a native of Washington State who served a career in the United States Navy and now lives on a small farm near Stevens Pass, WA. Thanks to the Powder Alliance, Peter was able to ski several new resorts this year including Kiroro, Japan, which he visited with friends who live in Okinawa. “It was an awesome season,” said Stitt, made even better by an awesome gift bag from Kiroro, Japan.

Being so new means Kiroro is gleaming with top notch lifts, hotels, and facilities. The resort offers 1,200 acres of in-bound terrain with 21 runs and an equal spread of green, blue and off piste trails. Of the nine lifts, one is a toasty gondola whilst five are high-speed, detachable chairs with cozy hoods. Last season they upped the ante with access to 2,600 more acres of backcountry terrain through three (3) designated entry points.

Winters in Japan mirror those of the United States and Canada lasting from mid-November to early May. This seven month season makes Kiroro the longest running resort in its region.

Kiroro is a snowball’s throw from the Sea of Japan, just 40 minutes from the port and fishing city of Otaru, with free shuttles from the JR station; 90 minutes from New Chitose Airport; 60 minutes from Sapporo; and 50 minutes from Niseko.

Day trips are great, but staying at the base is better. The sumptuous 282 room Kiroro Tribute Portfolio (former Piano Hotel) has the most features, located a Kilometer below the base, with several restaurants, and a little “village” shopping area. But the 140 room ski in/ski out Sheraton Kiroro (former Mountain Hotel) is really where you want to be to jump on the first lift. Every kind of cuisine can be found here from Italian to traditional Japanese. Mountaintop dining at the summit of Mt. Asari is also available offering beautiful scenery for skiers and snowboarders.

The Mountain Centre at Kiroro is well appointed with adult and children’s ski schools, retail shops, a new coffee shop, a ski and snowboard demo area, and kids’ day care. Besides skiing and snowboarding, Kiroro offers numerous winter activities including snowcat sightseeing tours, snow shoe tours, sledding, and snow tubing. Other amenities include indoor and open-air hot springs, a swimming pool, and a day spa to heighten relaxation.
